Star Sling #3 arrived

On a previous post I mentioned Vectorzoa's new game Star Sling. The game arrived last week. I have only played the game for a short time, so i can only give a first impression. The game comes with a box, game cart, overlay and manual (this is only the case with the limited edition).

What's the game like: you control a cursor, and the objective is to sling a circle around floating objects with the same shape. If you succeed the objects dissapear. If you catch a wrong shape in your sling, the objects multiply so you are further away from clearing the screen.

The use of the analoge stick with the cursor is very fresh and new approach not seen on another vectrex game. It reminds me a bit of the Nintendo DS with the stilo. Very fun game, I will play the game some more next week to make a better review.

Dutch newspaper ad

This scan of a dutch ad was send to me by Gert. Thanks a lot for this. Gert is trying to break the world record music mixing (96 hours) and he will be wearing one of my Vectrex shirts! If I can get a picture I will post it here. Gert is not doing this for himself, but to raise money for Kika (Children with Cancer project). You can make a donation with paypal. Check the link on the Kika site.

Spike Circus mini preview

Last month, Alex from Vectorzoa came to the Netherlands to visit the Retro-Computerday. Besides Logo, his first Vectrex title, he brought a playable demo of Spike Circus with him. While Alex was hunting for bargains I had the chance to play the game as one of first people.

Spike Circus has his own unique overlay, and when the games starts you are welcomed by the classic Circus tune. On the first levels you have to ride a unicycle, and stay up for some time. You do this by balancing with the analoge stick. When you mastered the balancing it is up to the next level, where it gets trickier because you have to balance in a smaller spot on the track, or you have to encounter hills etc.

If you think that's challeging, wait until Spike has to keep a chair balanced on his head while riding the unicycle, or juggle indian clubs. The juggling part is very well executed, and up to 5 clubs will be flying around our little hero. Special items will also appear to juggle with, my son had to laugh when he saw a Scramble missile on top of Spike's head.

This is one of those games where you want to have another go to master the next level (50 levels). Brilliant game and very enjoyable! Watch Vectorzoa for a release in the next months.

New design for www.vectrex.nl

After designing a new layout, migrating the content and some testing the site is almost finished. Some content is still being migrated, like the reviews from Daniel. The next few weeks the site will be expanding some more, so keep coming back.

With the new posting system I can publish faster and easier new articles, so you can find all the latest vectrex news on www.vectrex.nl!

After experimenting with some new designs (black/grey/blue) I stayed with the crisp white look. I hope you all like it.

This site is optimized for Firefox, but IE is also supported. Do the smart thing, and move to Firefox!

Star Sling

Alex has secretly released a new game: Star Sling. The limited edition [25] is sold out, but 4 will be on ebay. Check this link. You can download the game for your emulator or Vecflash (15/05/06 available). The cartridge version can be bought at Madtronix site.

From Alex site: Introducing a new concept in homebrew Vectrex Gaming. Oldschool programming! Having completed Logo which came in just under 16K, and Spike's Circus too, both of which use extra RAM, I thought I had been a bit spoilt. In fact I figure we've all been a bit spoilt with our "massive" 32K addressable ROM space etc., leisurely development timescales and fancy addons like Vecvox. So I thought I'd go back in time to the original conditions of those early GCE games. Therefore I present for your gaming pleasure a 4K game (same size as Berzerk, Armour Attack, etc..) produced in authentic GCE timescales. I hope this will start a new era where we produce authentic oldschool games and the awesome creations we are currently experiencing in 2006
